How to Get Out of Mud and Snow by Deactivating the ESP

The ESP (Electronic Stability Program) can become a hindrance in extreme low-traction situations (deep snow, mud, sand) because it cuts power as soon as it detects a slipping wheel, preventing the wheels from gaining grip to move the vehicle. This technique is only useful if you are already stuck and the vehicle won't move; if you are just driving on a snowy or muddy road, the system helps prevent skids. Look for the button with the car and skidding symbol and press it once: a yellow light will illuminate indicating "traction control off." On many vehicles, to also deactivate traction control, you must hold the same button for 3 to 5 seconds until a second light with the message "ESP OFF" illuminates. Now shift to second gear (or the "snow" position if you have an automatic transmission). Apply the accelerator steadily and progressively, make slight turns to the right and left, and if possible, slightly deflate the tires. Other suggestions include shoveling snow, placing gravel or mats under the wheels. If nothing works, call for help before worsening the situation or overheating the transmission.
