Where to Find the Spark Plugs on a Mercedes A-Class

On Mercedes A-Class vehicles (and generally on the 4-cylinder Mercedes engines with M260/M270/M282 architecture), the spark plugs are located in an unusual and less accessible position compared to most cars. They are not in the engine's combustion chamber, but at the bottom of two deep wells or tunnels that open on the right side of the engine (passenger side), near the wall separating the wheel well. To see and reach them, you must first remove the ignition coil that is inserted above them. Even after removing the coil, the actual spark plug is inserted in this tunnel. The reason for such a strange position is related to the engine's architecture and compactness, as the turbo and exhaust ducts occupy the space above and behind the cylinders, so the only exit for the spark plugs is to the side. Replacing the spark plugs on these engines is a medium to high difficulty job due to the limited space, a long sequence of disassembly, and the possibility of causing costly damage while removing the coils.
