Grab the shift knob with both hands and pull it upward (a strong and decisive motion) until it comes off the shift lever. To install the new knob: take the new shift knob and slide it onto the lever, tightening it until it is fully threaded; install the new boot and position it over the center console. Finally, test the movement of the lever in the center console to ensure the knob is correctly installed.
