In this video, see how to start a Mini even if the key battery is dead. Changing the battery is simple and quick, but if you notice the battery is flat and you're far from anywhere to get a replacement, what to do? The display instructs you to place the remote on the steering column.

If you check, on the right side of the steering wheel, you will find a plastic pin with a key icon. Hold the top part of the remote against that spot, and while doing so, you will be able to start the vehicle normally and then go buy a replacement battery.
