How to Replace the Power Steering Pump on a Mini Cooper

Model: Mini Mini R53, R52, R50 - Years 2001-2007

A common failure on Minis, especially the Mini Cooper, is the power steering pump. Changing it is not difficult, but you need to find a way to lift the vehicle safely. Do not rely too much on the jack, as it is generally not very reliable; it's better to place one or two wheels underneath for added safety. Once you have identified the pump, disconnect the two connectors and remove the screws that hold it in place. There are two screws at the back that may require some searching. The other two are at the front. Next, remove the metal pipe that contains the power steering fluid. Let it drain into a container, and then dispose of it at an authorised centre. You can find a refurbished pump for just over £100 on major e-commerce platforms; remember that the fluid must be green for this pump. It costs about £20 per litre. After you have removed the pump, simply insert the new one and top up the fluid from the engine bay.
