Video tutorial

Starting a diesel engine at -28°C in the Russian winter is a significant challenge: the low temperatures make the diesel fuel denser, the battery less efficient, and starting much more difficult, even causing the body to vibrate. Before attempting to start the engine, it is advisable to check the functionality of the battery; diesel fuel can gel at very low temperatures, blocking the fuel flow, so it is recommended to use so-called "arctic" diesel specific for low temperatures and containing antifreeze additives.

If we suspect that the diesel fuel is frozen, we can try to heat the fuel filter with a hairdryer. We follow a preheating procedure, turning the ignition key to "ON" without starting the engine, waiting for the glow plug light to come on and go off, and repeating this operation 3 or 4 times.

Press the clutch pedal all the way down while turning the key to start the engine: this reduces the load on the starter motor, then turn the key for no more than 10/15 seconds at a time, and do not insist too much.
