How to tell when a shock absorber has exploded

A defect that manifests especially on vehicles of the VAG group is the wear of the shock absorbers, which can lead to what the youtuber calls an "explosion", meaning the sudden failure of the component. The symptoms are: unstable car, especially when braking or accelerating; feeling of swaying, especially in curves or with crosswinds; after a bump or pothole, the car sways a lot: the shock absorber does not return to position quickly. We may also hear creaking or loud noises, and if the shock absorbers do not keep the wheel firmly on the ground, the tires wear unevenly. Furthermore, a "blown" shock absorber often leaks hydraulic fluid. In the video, we see a practical test: we press on the fender and release. If the car sways more than 1/2 times before stabilizing, the shock absorber is worn out, while a new one is stiff and returns to position immediately. Also, a healthy shock absorber is dry, while a broken one is often covered in sticky dust (oil mixed with dirt). Shock absorbers should always be replaced in pairs.
