Subaru Forester - Video tutorial

Model: Subaru Forester SF, MK 1 - Years 1997-2002
Part: Engine
Operation: Knock sensor replacement

The knock sensor is used to identify any abnormal combustion in the combustion chamber (knock or knock). By means of the detonation sensors it is possible to obtain a particularly effective combustion of the mixture of air and fuel: the sensors are used to adjust the ignition advance to optimal values, to avoid detonation (knock on the head). This optimizes engine performance and reduces fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Furthermore, the detonation sensors have the function of protecting the engine components involved in the combustion process. The knock sensor, installed on the engine block (cylinder head or intake manifold) is based on the operating principle of a piezoelectric element and detects accelerations on the engine structure at the point where it is installed. The piezoelectric element, depending on the acceleration it receives, generates an output voltage which is used to identify knocking events. To replace the sensor, simply unscrew the relative fixing pin and disconnect the socket to be applied to the new sensor.
