How do you mount snow chains if you don't have winter tires? Lay the chains on the ground near the wheel, making sure they are not twisted, and pass them under the tire, centering them well. Connect the two main hooks on the top of the tread (outer side of the wheel); make sure the chain adheres evenly to the tire. Attach the side straps (if present) to distribute the tension evenly. Pull the tension joints (which are usually elastic hooks or lever tensioners) until you achieve a uniform tension on the entire wheel. Check that the chain is tight and not hanging. Make sure it does not touch brakes, fenders, or mechanical parts. Drive a few meters and then stop for a final tension check. If necessary, tighten; in fact, chains tend to loosen in the first few meters of driving. The chains (mounted on the drive wheels!) should be removed as soon as they are no longer needed and rinsed with water to remove salt and gravel. They should then be dried before storing them to prevent rusting.
