How does a leaf spring suspension system work?

The crossbow we see in the drawing is a spring, primitive yet effective, made up of a series of overlapping steel blades of decreasing length, secured together at the center. It functions like a bow, bending under a load and releasing energy when it is unloaded. The blades are stacked and held together by a central bolt and clamps; the longest blade (called the "master") has eyelets at the ends to attach to the frame. When the wheel encounters an obstacle, the crossbow arches, the blades slide slightly over one another, dissipating some of the friction energy, and when the obstacle is passed, they return to their original shape. This type of suspension is used in industrial vehicles, especially in rigid axles where strength and load capacity are required.
