Main reasons why suspensions make knocking noises

This video outlines the main reasons why suspensions produce annoying knocking noises: the first reason is the stabiliser bar links, which make frequent and intermittent knocking sounds when driving over bumps; check the bushes for cracks or play. Use a crowbar to leverage the structural and load-bearing parts in various directions; the video shows how evident the play in defective components is, which can only be replaced.

The second reason is the shock absorber mount, which causes metallic thuds and squeaks on uneven roads or while turning the steering wheel; remove the mount cover and leverage under the wheel; if you see the piston moving, it means there is a loose nut or a damaged seat and a damaged rubber shock absorber: again, the only solution is to replace the damaged part.

The third reason is the ball joints, which generate knocks or squeaks during manoeuvres, irregular tyre wear, and sudden swerving.

Shake the wheel both horizontally and vertically (with the car lifted): a knocking noise indicates a fault, and damp and dirty dust covers indicate a leak from a component; however, this method only works if the ball joint is nearly worn out; once again, the only solution is replacement.

The fourth reason is the tie rods, which make knocking noises over small bumps or gravel, cause steering wheel vibrations, and irregular tyre wear.

With the car lifted, shake the wheel horizontally: if the components make noise and have play, the tie rod or its end is broken and must be replaced. Fifth are the bushes, which squeak, cause irregular tyre wear, insufficient steering, lower the front of the car too much, and cause the steering wheel to vibrate: check the elasticity of the bushes with a crowbar and the condition of the rubber components, which lose elasticity over time and can only be replaced.

It is advisable to check the exhaust system mounts, suspension springs, and generally anything that may cause vibrations.
