What is the reason why the timing chain makes noise? As the YouTuber mentions, the main reason is stretching: the chain stretches due to high mileage or poor maintenance and hits against the guides, producing a metallic ticking sound. Another reason could be poor or dirty engine oil, which means the chain is not sufficiently lubricated and becomes noisy. Additionally, the guides can break (especially on Peugeot/Citroen 1.6 engines). The metallic ticking sound when cold disappears after a few seconds with the hydraulic tensioner; we may hear a constant metallic noise between 2,000 and 3,000 RPM. This is a problem not to be ignored, as it can lead to catastrophic damage if valves and pistons collide.
