What to Do When the Car Does Not Recognise the Key

If the key is inserted but the engine does not start, the dashboard lights are on, but there is no response, or the message "key not recognised" appears on the display, what should you do? If you are near your home, the first step is to try the spare key: if it works, the issue is with the main key. Otherwise, reset the ECU by disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery for a few minutes. Other reasons could include interference from electromagnetic fields, physical damage from water or heat to the internal chip, and of course, a flat battery in the remote. Many vehicles allow for an emergency procedure: partially insert the key to activate the ignition; press the accelerator and observe the warning lights; enter the key's PIN following the blinking of the lights (you will need to consult the manual for the specific procedure).
