Causes of problems with a car immobiliser

In this video, we explain how car immobilisers work: the principle is that each time you turn the key, the computer reads the key code and compares it with the codes stored in the vehicle. If they match, the vehicle starts.

If the vehicle does not recognise the code, it will not start. These are general guidelines, but each vehicle has its specific system, which should be referenced in the owner's manual.

If it is a keyless vehicle and the remote has a flat battery, most vehicles have a backup procedure to start the car anyway. The immobiliser light comes on when the key is not recognised: if it lights up, try locking the car again, and this usually resolves the issue, or attempt to start the engine a couple of times.

It may be worth trying the second key, as the problem could be with the key itself. If the vehicle starts and then stalls immediately, do not hesitate to call a breakdown service and have it taken to a garage, as this is a fault that cannot be repaired by an amateur.
