How to Test the Oil Pressure Sensor

The oil pressure sensor test can be summarised in three steps: a basic test using a multimeter. Measure continuity by placing one probe on the PIN and the other on the casing; if you hear a "beep", the sensor is closed and functioning correctly. Measure the resistance in Ohms and compare it to the specifications for the component. A second test involves pressure: connect a pump (manual, compressed air, or cooling tester) to the sensor inlet. Gradually apply pressure; the sensor should open (lose continuity) when the correct pressure is reached. A third test checks for leaks: fill the sensor with water and apply pressure. If you see bubbles, the sensor is punctured or otherwise damaged. Most of these sensors are normally closed (contact present when the engine is off). Check whether yours is NC or NA.
