Causes of Power Steering Malfunction

In this video, we will look at the main causes of electric power steering malfunction: usually, in these cases, the red ESP warning light comes on, and the power steering suddenly deactivates. The cause is almost always damage to the control unit, oxidised wiring, or loose connectors that need to be checked manually. For control unit damage, an OBD2 tool will be necessary. Another issue that may manifest with intermittent power steering and the warning light coming on could be a weak battery; indeed, power steering requires high current, especially during parking. However, the problem could also be a faulty alternator that does not sufficiently charge the battery. Incorrect tyre pressure can also cause the steering to feel heavier than normal, especially at low speeds. Simply check the tyre pressures against those listed on the label inside the driver's door. If the steering becomes extremely stiff and you hear metallic noises, then you are likely facing a power steering or steering column failure: replacing the EPS module will be necessary (this is a complex and costly operation).
