This YouTuber explains the main reason why the fuel level indicator in our car doesn't work. In fact, in 80% of cases, the problem is due to the level sensor (or variable resistor) connected to a float in the tank. Typical issues include wear on the electrical contacts. This problem is more pronounced if the tank often runs nearly empty, causing the float to operate in the same area, wearing down at the same point; it is also linked to moisture and impurities in the fuel that oxidise the contacts, and to the float, which can become stuck. However, we cannot exclude electrical issues: a blown fuse, disconnected or corroded connectors, faulty earth, or damaged cables. Also to consider, although quite rare, is a faulty instrument cluster or an issue with the ECU.
