What you need to know about auxiliary lights

It is indeed legal to add auxiliary lights to the front of a vehicle BUT only if you strictly comply with the ECE R112 regulation, which is the European standard (and its national homologations), defining all technical requirements: each device must be individually approved according to the applicable regulation (R112 for auxiliary headlights; R19 for fog lights; R148 for daytime running lights, etc.) and bear the approval mark inscribed on the lens or body (a circle with an E13 for Italy). The Italian Highway Code (art. 72 and 154) specifies position, colour, controls, and adjustment in detail. Be cautious with aftermarket light bars, which often have a "DOT" marking that is the US standard, making them illegal for road use in Europe. Therefore: only purchase devices with ECE approval marks, have them installed by a specialised workshop that can issue a compliance report from an authorised expert, and possibly also update the vehicle registration document. Without this annotation, the vehicle is not compliant. In case of an accident, the insurance may refuse to cover the damage and hold you liable for operating a non-compliant vehicle.
