How Does the Speedometer Work?

The speedometer is a device used to record the instantaneous speed or the average speed detected over a specific period. The motorcycle speedometer, just like the car speedometer, utilises the angular speeds of the rotating shafts (wheels) to obtain the forward speed, generally expressed in mph. This type of speedometer works by using known data about the wheel and its rotation: since it knows the angular speed of the wheel, it can easily determine the linear speed of the vehicle. The speedometer overestimates the instantaneous speed as required by law.
