What are the pros and cons between timing belts and chains? It is not necessarily true that a chain, just because it is metal, is more durable; technology has made them much more resilient, as they are no longer made of simple rubber and can last up to 100,000 miles or more. It is also true that for the same reason of advancing technology, chains are often now guaranteed "for life", meaning for the entire lifespan of the vehicle. However, they need to be lubricated with engine oil; thus, proper vehicle maintenance becomes crucial. Then there is the noise factor. The belt is much quieter than a chain, which will vibrate slightly; it is lighter than the chain, creates less friction, and therefore consumes less power. Until the 1960s, all cars had chains: belts did not exist. Recently, there has been a return to chains, as manufacturers are extending maintenance intervals, but the chain requires maintenance and quality oil, which poses a risk of doing more harm. Therefore, if you have a chain, perform regular maintenance; if you have a belt, have a skilled mechanic check it occasionally.
