We always talk about how to change the timing belt (or chain) but do we know exactly what it is for? It is a component that connects the crankshaft - located in the lower part of the engine - with the camshaft - located on the cylinder head. The crankshaft follows the movement of the pistons, while the camshaft controls the movement of the valves. These two movements must be perfectly synchronized, and to allow this perfect movement, the timing chain comes into play, which will allow the valves to open and close according to the position of the piston: for example, if the piston is descending, the intake valves will be opened to allow air intake; when the piston rises, the exhaust valves will come into operation to allow the expulsion of exhaust gases.
