We often talk about how to change the timing belt (or chain), but do we know exactly what it does? It is a component that connects the crankshaft - located at the bottom of the engine - with the camshaft - which is located on the cylinder head. The crankshaft follows the movement of the pistons, while the camshaft regulates the movement of the valves.

These two movements must be perfectly synchronised, and to allow for this perfect movement, the timing chain comes into play, enabling the valves to open and close according to the position of the piston: for example, when the piston is descending, the intake valves will open to allow air in; when the piston rises, the exhaust valves will function to expel the burnt gases.
