What does it mean when the brake warning light comes on in a Volkswagen Polo?

In the Volkswagen Polo, the brake fluid reservoir is located right above the brake pump, on the left side of the engine compartment. The level can be seen by unscrewing the cap, or by shining a light behind the reservoir, and in this way we can see if the level is close to the maximum. If the brake warning light comes on - and it's not because the handbrake is engaged - then it means that the level is dropping and we need to question why the level has dropped. There could be a leak in the system or the issue could be with the brake pads or discs wearing down. It is advisable to restore the brake fluid level, without forgetting to inspect both components as soon as possible.
