Volkswagen's active pedestrian protection is a safety system that automatically raises the engine hood in the event of a collision with a pedestrian, to reduce the severity of injuries. Sensors in the front bumper detect a collision with a soft object, and a control unit analyzes the data in milliseconds: if the impact corresponds to a pedestrian (and not a rigid object, like a pole), an explosive charge mechanism is activated, and the hood lifts a few centimeters at the rear, creating a deformation space between the hood and the underlying components. The pedestrian then impacts a more yielding surface, reducing the risk of head and leg injuries. It is a reversible system; if there is no damage, the hood can be manually lowered again; it activates only for impacts at speeds between 25-50 km/h; at higher speeds, the impact is too violent to be mitigated.
