Changing Engine Oil and Filter

Changing the oil and filter on your Golf GT TDI can be a procedure that does not necessarily require the help of your mechanic. Take the car for a drive to ensure the engine runs correctly, then park the car and wait for the oil to settle; check and note the oil level; now remove the engine cover. Place some rags around the filter area. Insert the extraction tube into the dipstick tube and push it down to the bottom of the sump. Start extracting the oil. Remove the filter cap using a ratchet spanner with the appropriate socket. Remove the old filter. Meanwhile, continue to pump out the oil, and when finished, use the extractor to remove the oil from the filter area. Now take a new filter and, after positioning it correctly, insert it into its housing. Remove the old rubber seal from the filter cap and replace it with the new one (included with the new filter). Also, replace the small O-ring located on the end of the cap. Be sure to lubricate the new seals with a bit of oil. Insert the cap, screw it in by hand, and tighten it securely with the appropriate spanner. Now reposition the dipstick and remove the rags. Pour in the new oil (approximately 4.5 litres). Close the cap. All that’s left is to check the operation by running the engine for a bit and ensuring that the warning light on the on-board computer is no longer illuminated. Check the dipstick again, then you can replace the engine cover. Remember to dispose of the old oil properly.
