Check Engine Timing Alignment

Model: Volkswagen Golf Golf IV, MK 4, Golf 4 - Years 1997-2003

If the engine runs unevenly (commonly referred to as running on three cylinders) or there are starting issues, there may be a timing problem, meaning the firing sequence in the cylinders is off. You will need to check the alignment of the timing marks between the timing pulleys and the ignition timing. Once the timing belt covers are removed, rotate the crankshaft pulley until the timing marks between the pulley and the block are aligned: in this same position, the timing marks of the camshaft pulley and the ignition coil should also be aligned.
