Check Engine Oil Pressure

Model: Volkswagen Passat 3BG, B5 - Years 1996-2005

If the oil pressure warning light illuminates on the instrument cluster, there are two possibilities: either the pressure sensor (commonly known as the bulb) is damaged, or there is a problem with the oil pump. To determine the issue, connect a pressure gauge in place of the bulb and measure the oil pressure level in the engine. The bulb is located near the oil filter housing, and to access it, remove the coolant reservoir; then disconnect the connector, unscrew the bulb, and screw in the pressure gauge hose. Start the engine and measure the oil pressure at idle and at a higher RPM: the correct pressure values are approximately 1.2-1.5 bar at idle and up to 4.5 bar at 3,500 RPM; if the measured pressure is lower, it may indicate a fault with the oil pump that will need replacing.
