How to Replace the Track Rod Ends of the VW Passat 5

Replacing the track rod ends of the Volkswagen Passat, model B5, is a relatively simple task that can be done independently, thanks to our short video tutorial that will guide you through the steps for the replacement. Start the replacement operation by removing the tyre cover and then the wheel itself. Continue the disassembly by lifting the vehicle and clean the fastening element that connects the track rod ends to the steering knuckle. After cleaning, use a 15 mm socket to unscrew the nut that attaches the rod to the knuckle and remove the fixing bolts. Using a hammer and chisel, remove the rod. At this point, loosen the lock nut that attaches the tie rod to the bar with an 18 mm and a 22 mm spanner. Unscrew the rod and screw in a new steering track rod end. Apply copper grease to the threaded part of the rod and insert it to connect the rod to the knuckle, tightening the nut with a 13 mm spanner and fitting the bolt. Tighten the locking nut and the lock nut. Tighten the various bolts and reassemble the wheel.
