To adjust the handbrake on the Volkswagen Up, you need to loosen the screw that secures the plastic cover of the centre tunnel, which completely encases the handbrake lever: this cover is secured by a screw located inside the cup holder. Once this screw is loosened, you can lift the cover and access the bolt that tensions the handbrake cable: tightening this bolt will make the handbrake firmer and reduce its travel; conversely, loosening it will make the handbrake softer and increase its travel.
