The procedure for adjusting the handbrake on the Volkswagen Polo involves removing the trim panel from the rear of the centre tunnel. Once this panel is removed, you will be able to locate the nut underneath that adjusts the tension of the handbrake cable.

Tightening the bolt will make the handbrake lever stiffer and reduce its travel; conversely, loosening the bolt will increase the travel and make the lever softer. At the end of the procedure, reinstall the panel at the rear of the tunnel.
