How to Replace the Transfer Case Gear on the BMW X3

If you feel jerking, especially during startup or acceleration, and the 4x4 warning light illuminates on the dashboard, there is likely a problem with the transfer case. This is a common issue with this model because the motor that operates the transfer case has a plastic gear that tends to deteriorate. The definitive solution is not to install a new motor but to replace the original gear with a rebuilt brass one, which is readily available in the aftermarket. The replacement is straightforward: remove the motor from the transfer case (it is very similar to a window lift motor), drill a small hole to remove the cover, the oil seal, and the retaining circlip of the old gear, then install the new one, making sure to apply gear grease and seal the hole. It is also recommended to replace the transfer case oil and reset the clutches using appropriate diagnostic equipment.
