If, especially during the starting or acceleration phase, you feel some jerks and the 4x4 warning light comes on on the instrument panel display, then it means that there is a problem with the transfer case: this is a very recurring defect on this model since the motor which drives the divider itself has a plastic gear that tends to deteriorate; the definitive solution to this problem is not to install a new motor but rather to replace the original gear with one rebuilt in brass, easily available in the after market; the replacement is very simple to carry out, it is enough to remove the motor from the distributor (it is very similar to a window lifter motor), make a small hole to remove the cover, the oil seal and the seeger fixing the old gear and then install the new one, taking care to apply gear grease and seal the hole; it is also advisable to replace the distributor oil and to reset the clutches with the appropriate diagnostic instrumentation.
