Transfer Case Oil Replacement

Model: BMW X3 MK 1, E83 - Years 2003-2010

If during acceleration the vehicle tends to jerk and the 4x4 and traction control warning lights illuminate on the dashboard, it is likely that the transfer case is not functioning correctly: this is a common issue with BMW X3 vehicles caused either by damage to the plastic gear inside the transfer case, or by worn oil and clutches, or even by uneven tire wear (if the front and rear tires are different, it alters the rolling coefficient between the front and rear axles, which can lead to improper activation of the transfer case); it is recommended to start with replacing the transfer case oil (located just behind the engine, near the exhaust pipe) by lifting the vehicle, removing both the fill cap and the drain plug, and then filling the transfer case with about 24 fl oz of specific BMW oil; after the oil replacement, it is also essential to reset the clutches using a diagnostic tool.
