How to Install a Tow Hitch on a BMW 3 Series

Installing a tow hitch must be done at an authorized shop since, along with the hitch's compliance certificate, you need to attach the installation receipt that proves the work was done correctly for the subsequent inspection and testing required for the hitch's approval. The installation usually requires removing the rear bumper, and in this case, the original reinforcement crossmember is removed to install one that accommodates the tow hitch and uses the same mounting points. After completing the mechanical assembly, you must then perform the electrical connections for the socket that will connect to the trailer.
