If the handbrake lever has a very long travel, meaning it tends to rise several clicks (7-8), it indicates that you need to adjust the rear brake shoes using the appropriate adjuster. With the handbrake disengaged, lift the rear of the vehicle and remove one of the wheel mounting bolts from the hub. Rotate the wheel until you can access the adjuster through the bolt hole and use a screwdriver to turn the gear to compensate for the wear of the shoes and any stretching of the cable.

Be careful not to lock the wheel.
