Replacing a Faulty Shift Lever

Model: BMW Serie 3 E36 - Years 1990-2001
Part: Transmission

Replacing the shift lever is a labor-intensive task because you need to disassemble the entire transmission assembly. Position the vehicle on a lift and start removing the covers, then the various bolts that secure the transmission to the vehicle. Before this operation, it is necessary to disconnect the transmission components. Once the transmission is removed, you can now take out the shift lever. Begin by pulling the rubber protective boot from the tunnel after removing the knob on top. Use long-nose pliers to remove the clip at the base of the lever, then pull it out from its mount.
