Instructions for Replacing the Contact Switch

Model: BMW Serie 5 E39 - Years 1995-2003

The contact switch is located just behind the ignition key cylinder. To access it, first remove the protective covers of the light switch controls. Once the covers are removed, adjust the steering wheel (electric adjustment system) all the way down and out to increase maneuvering space. You can then comfortably access the switch and disconnect the plugs before unscrewing the corresponding mounting screws. Damage to this component is quite common, especially if there are frequent starts: the sliding contacts tend to wear out.
