Cleaning Starter Switch Contacts

Model: BMW Serie 5 E39 - Years 1995-2003

If the starter motor does not activate when turning the ignition key, there may be a contact issue in the starter switch. You can try cleaning the contacts of the switch. First, remove it from the back of the ignition lock. Once it is on a workbench, gently open the plastic cover by releasing the tabs without breaking them. Then, extract the various components, keeping track of their alignment, until you access the contacts. Clean the contacts with fine-grit sandpaper and spray everything with contact cleaner. Reassemble in reverse order.
