Let's see how to change the oil and filter on a BMW E53: You will need a 36 mm socket wrench to open the filter cap and remove it. Place it in a container for disposal along with the engine oil; separate it from the cap and the gasket (install a new gasket on the cap, then insert the new filter and place it back, tightening it with the 36 mm wrench.

Now lift the vehicle, and using a 17 mm socket wrench, open the oil pan plug to drain all the oil into a container, which you will dispose of with the filter.

Now it's time to top off the oil through the upper cap: 6 quarts of SAE 5W30. Now you can close the cap, and the operation is complete.
