One reason the engine may struggle to maintain idle or run very unevenly, with the revs continuously rising and falling, is the clogging of the throttle body; this is an element located at the intake of the engine that regulates the airflow into the engine via a specific butterfly valve. The presence of dirt in the butterfly seat can disrupt proper functioning; the first cleaning attempt can be made without removing the throttle body, simply by removing the corresponding hose and using a suitable cleaning spray.
