How to Fix the Stiff Gear Change on a Fiat Ducato Van

The gear change on a Fiat Ducato can become stiff or jam, especially in vans left unused during winter. The cause is almost always corrosion of the linkage (the mechanism connecting the gear lever to the gearbox), exposed to moisture and salt. A new gearbox is not necessary: lubrication and a bit of patience will suffice. Get assistance: while someone moves the gear lever (with the engine off), spray WD-40 or a penetrating lubricant on the linkage joints, visible in the engine bay next to the gearbox. Move the lever back and forth to distribute the product. If the movement improves, the problem is resolved. For a permanent solution, apply a thick grease to the same parts: WD-40 dries out and washes away, while grease remains and protects for a long time. Your gear change will be smooth again.
