How to Replace the Gear Oil in a 1.9 MULTIJET JTD Engine (Fiat Scudo)

The engine you will be working on is a 1.9 JTD MULTIJET, fitted to various models - both Fiat and Alfa Romeo - including cars and commercial vehicles. You will need 2 litres of gear oil, a suitable container, and a 10 mm Allen key. Work from underneath the vehicle, with the engine cold and on a perfectly level surface (not on a slope). Easily identify the gear oil sump, which has a bolt on the side that closes the so-called "drain plug" from which you can drain the used oil. When no more oil is dripping from the vehicle, place the container aside - the used oil must be disposed of at an authorised centre - and refit the bolt to the gear oil sump. Open the engine bonnet and locate the gear oil filler cap, which is slightly lower than the bonnet, on the front right side of the engine. It is a black, protruding cap that incorporates a dipstick inside. Remove the cap and, using a funnel with an extended neck - ensuring that the part entering the filler neck is smaller than the neck itself to avoid spills - pour the two litres of oil needed into the gear oil reservoir, pouring slowly. Reinsert the cap with the dipstick and check that the level is just below the MAX mark. Close the cap. The job is complete.
