When performing a repair that requires the removal of the cylinder head, it is good practice to use a new set of bolts for reattachment; start by cleaning the threads of the fixing holes with a tap of the correct diameter and pitch (use a thread gauge to select the pitch) to prevent swarf from entering the cylinders.

Then, apply copper grease to the bottom of the thread and just below the head of the new bolts before installing them, to prevent oxidation and make future removal easier; proceed to tighten the bolts following a cross pattern using a torque wrench and then a calibrated wrench.
