Instructions for Replacing the Starter Motor

Model: Hyundai Santa Fe MK 1 - Years 2000-2006

If the starter motor does not engage when turning the ignition key, it is likely damaged; however, before rushing to replace it, ensure the battery is charged. Once this check is complete, proceed with replacing the starter motor located beneath the gearbox, just behind the catalytic converter: it is essential that the engine is cold. Disconnect the battery and access from below by removing the splash guard and then the heat shield attached to the starter motor. At this point, disconnect the power cables from the starter motor and remove the bolts securing it to the gearbox to complete the disassembly. Then, reverse the process for installing the new starter motor (you may also opt for a refurbished one).
