It is quite common for the shift knob and its covering boot to deteriorate over time due to wear, car wash products, and even the acidity of your hands. You can purchase a new boot complete with a knob from the aftermarket, and the replacement is really easy to perform. Start by detaching the trim at the base of the boot to release it from the tunnel cover base. Lift the boot and detach the ring located just below the knob to remove it, then proceed in reverse for the installation of the new one.
