Once you open the tailgate, it is essential to remove the protective cover that conceals the two 10 mm screws that you need to remove to allow the light unit to be pulled from its housing. Once removed, just pull - with some care as the fit is quite intricate - and the light unit will come out fairly easily. Disconnect the electrical connector, and now you can remove the red cover to expose the bulbs for replacement if any are damaged.
