Let's see how to replace the water pump on a Toyota RAV-4 MK3: the initial symptom was a variable noise with the engine speed, suggesting it came from a component driven by the accessory belt. To access the component, it was necessary to remove the expansion tank, plastic covers, and the upper right engine mount. The engine must be supported by a jack to remove the mount. After removing the service belt and isolating the fault, disconnect the battery and alternator (the latter must be removed to create space). You need to drain the coolant and remove the old pump, blocking the pulley with a crowbar and removing the bolts that hold it to the pump, then the 4 bolts and 2 nuts that secure the pump to the block, remove the pump and any traces of the old gasket. You can find the new pump, for example, on auto-doc.it, specifying whether it is a diesel or petrol model, mount the pump on a layer of specific sealing silicone, screw the bolts and nuts by hand and tighten to 9 Nm; then reassemble the pulley (26 Nm), reinstall the alternator, the engine mount, the belt, and all removed components. Fill the cooling circuit with the fluid specified by the manufacturer, start the engine, and bring it to operating temperature to bleed the air. This is a job that requires experience and a certain set of tools.
