To change the battery in a Toyota 4Runner, start by opening the hood. Loosen, but do not remove, the nut on the negative battery terminal. Remove the cover from the positive terminal, then loosen, but do not remove, the nut on the positive battery terminal. At this point, you can remove the bracket that holds the battery in place. Once the bracket is removed, take out the battery, remove the plastic tray, and clean the battery tray and terminals. Clean the plastic tray, then place the new battery in its spot. Reinstall the bracket that holds the battery and tighten the nut on the positive terminal, making sure to remove the protective cover first. Replace the cover on the positive terminal and tighten the nut. Finally, close the hood and test the new battery.
