Brake Caliper Inspection/Cleaning

For brake system maintenance, start by lifting the vehicle on a ramp and removing the front wheels; then undo the caliper mounting bolts and slide it off the bracket; next, remove the old brake pads, clean and lubricate the sliding plates, the rubber of the cylinder, and the caliper sliding pins. Generally, it is not necessary to disconnect the brake fluid pipe from the caliper unless you notice leaks from the rubber of the cylinder; however, if you want to clean the caliper, you need to extract the piston by pressing it out from the pipe seat, thoroughly clean the piston and its seat, lubricate the internal seals and the piston with specific grease, and reinsert it into its seat, removing the circlip and the rubber boot to apply when the piston is halfway through its stroke to complete its retraction. Reconnect the brake fluid pipe to the caliper, insert the new pads, refit the caliper, and restore the fluid level by bleeding through the appropriate valve.
