This video shows what happens if the auxiliary belt pulley breaks, typically mounted on a metal bracket bolted to the crankshaft, with a part designed to dampen vibrations. If the belt fails to turn, on many vehicles the water pump stops, the alternator fails, and the steering may become heavy due to the power steering not functioning: in short, a disaster.

Sometimes the pulley can detach in a strange manner, causing the belt to slip and spin in the engine bay, tearing wires and hoses. In the case shown in the video, the pulley drives two belts, with the outer one connected to the air conditioning compressor.

In this example, the pulley spins freely due to a crack that has formed inside, but in other cases, the rubber part can completely detach from the metal part, causing breakages, which fortunately did not occur in this case.
