Euro 6 and later diesel cars are equipped with an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system that uses AdBlue to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. Therefore, if the AdBlue tank is empty or the system detects a malfunction, the control unit can prevent the engine from starting to stop the car from operating in a way that exceeds legal pollution limits, blocking the restart after shutdown. In fact, without AdBlue, the SCR system cannot convert NOx into nitrogen and water vapor, thus leading to excessive emissions. The law requires manufacturers to implement this blocking mechanism, which does not exist in Euro 5 and earlier models.
