In this video, we can see how to recognise a faulty TPMS sensor. First, the yellow pressure warning light stays on even though the tyres are correctly inflated; also note an intermittent warning: the light turns on and off without reason; or there may be missing data, such as the absence of pressure indication for a specific wheel. Diagnose the problem by manually checking the tyre pressures with a gauge; drive for a few minutes: if the system does not update, then a sensor may be dead. Naturally, in these cases, it is always useful to have an OBD2 reader or a TPMS tool. Common causes of failures are dead sensor batteries. Note that the batteries cannot be replaced; the entire sensor must be changed, and it is recommended to change all four, as they are activated together. Unless one has been damaged by hitting a kerb or a careless tyre change. In winter, salt and moisture can also damage the contact. Replacing sensors costs between £50 and £150 per tyre (depending on the car) and it is best done by a professional, as recalibration will be necessary afterwards.
